Mildred Harnack was an American woman who became a leader in the German Resistance to Nazi terror. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1902, and moved to Germany with her husband, Arvid Harnack, in 1929. Mildred Harnack's Early Life and Education

Mildred Harnack's Move to Germany

In 1929, Mildred Harnack married Arvid Harnack, a German economist. The couple moved to Germany, where Arvid had a job as a professor at the University of Göttingen. Mildred quickly became involved in the German anti-Nazi movement. She joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany and worked to organize resistance to the Nazi regime. In 1933, the Nazis came to power in Germany. The Harnacks were forced to flee Göttingen, and they moved to Berlin. In Berlin, Mildred became a key figure in the Red Orchestra, a resistance group that was led by Arvid.

Mildred Harnack's Resistance Activities

The Red Orchestra was a highly organized and effective resistance group. It had members all over Germany, and it was responsible for a number of sabotage and espionage operations. Mildred Harnack was one of the most important members of the Red Orchestra. She was responsible for recruiting new members, raising funds, and providing intelligence to the Allies. She also played a key role in organizing the failed assassination attempt on Hitler in 1943.

Mildred Harnack's Arrest and Execution

The Gestapo arrested Mildred Harnack in 1942. She was tortured and interrogated for months, but she refused to give up her comrades. She was sentenced to death in 1943 and was executed by firing squad on February 16, 1943. She was 40 years old.
