Betty Shabazz was born Betty Sanders in 1934 in Detroit, Michigan. She was the daughter of a Baptist minister and a social worker. Betty was a bright and ambitious child, and she excelled in school. She went on to attend Tuskegee Institute, where she studied nursing.
