Caesar was a brilliant military commander, and he was also a wise and just ruler. He reformed the Roman government, and he gave citizenship to all free men in the empire. Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio, Corsica, in 1769. His father was a lawyer, and his mother was a member of the Bonaparte family. Napoleon was a brilliant student, and he studied at the military academy in Paris. He was also a gifted athlete, and he excelled in both fencing and horsemanship.
In 1796, Napoleon was appointed commander of the French army in Italy. He quickly led the French to victory in a series of battles, and he soon conquered the entire region. Napoleon's victories in Italy made him a hero to the French people, and he was soon appointed First Consul of France.
In 1804, Napoleon crowned himself emperor of France. He then set out to conquer the rest of Europe. Napoleon was victorious in a series of wars against Austria, Prussia, and Russia. By 1812, Napoleon's empire stretched from Spain to Russia. However, Napoleon's invasion of Russia was a disaster, and he was forced to retreat. Napoleon was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, and he was exiled to the island of Elba. He escaped from Elba in 1815 and returned to France. However, he was defeated again at the Battle of Waterloo, and he was exiled to the island of Saint Helena. Napoleon died on Saint Helena in 1821.
