Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is the world's most popular role-playing game, with millions of players around the globe. It has been translated into more than 30 languages and has spawned a vast array of merchandise, including novels, comics, video games, and movies. But how did D&D come to be? And what are the stories behind the people, places, and events that have shaped its rich and storied past?
Hawk Moor: The Unofficial History of Dungeons & Dragons is the definitive account of the game's history. Written by veteran game designer and historian Jon Peterson, Hawk Moor provides an in-depth look at the origins of D&D, its early years at TSR, and its eventual rise to global prominence. Peterson draws on a wealth of primary source material, including interviews with key figures in the game's development, to provide a comprehensive and engaging narrative that is sure to captivate D&D fans of all ages.
The Origins of D&D
The origins of D&D can be traced back to the early 1970s, when a group of wargamers in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, began experimenting with new ways to play. Led by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, these gamers developed a set of rules that allowed them to create their own fantasy worlds and characters. These rules were eventually published in 1974 as the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons.
The first edition of D&D was a huge success, and it quickly became the most popular role-playing game in the world. TSR, the company founded by Gygax and Arneson, soon began publishing a wide range of D&D supplements and adventures. These supplements helped to expand the game's world and provide players with new challenges and adventures.
The Rise of TSR
In the early 1980s, TSR became one of the most successful game companies in the world. The company's revenue grew exponentially, and it began to expand its operations into new markets. TSR also began to develop new D&D products, including the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) game and the Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms campaign settings.
The AD&D game was a more complex and detailed version of D&D, and it quickly became the preferred game for many serious role-players. The Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms campaign settings provided players with new worlds to explore and new adventures to experience.
The Decline of TSR
In the mid-1980s, TSR began to experience financial difficulties. The company's revenue declined, and it was forced to lay off employees. TSR also made a number of poor business decisions, including the decision to sue Palladium Books, a rival game company. The lawsuit was unsuccessful, and it further damaged TSR's reputation.
In 1997, TSR was sold to Wizards of the Coast, a company that had been founded by former TSR employees. Wizards of the Coast has since revived the D&D brand and released a number of new editions of the game. D&D is now more popular than ever, and it continues to be the world's most popular role-playing game.
The Legacy of D&D
Dungeons & Dragons has had a profound impact on popular culture. The game has inspired countless works of fiction, art, and music. It has also helped to create a new generation of gamers and storytellers. D&D is a truly unique and special game, and it is sure to continue to inspire and entertain for many years to come.
