Jefferson Davis was an American politician who served as the president of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. He was born in Kentucky in 1808 and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1828. He served in the U.S. Army for several years before resigning in 1835 to pursue a career in politics.
Davis was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1845 and served until 1851. He was then elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served until 1861. Davis was a strong supporter of slavery and opposed abolition. He was also a strong advocate for states' rights and believed that the federal government should have limited power.
When the American Civil War broke out in 1861, Davis was elected president of the Confederate States of America. He led the Confederacy for four years, until its defeat in 1865. Davis was captured by Union forces in 1865 and was imprisoned for two years. He was released from prison in 1867 and spent the rest of his life in Mississippi.
