The Extraordinary Life of a Scottish Medium

Helen Duncan was a remarkable woman. Born in 1897 in a small Scottish village, she developed her mediumistic abilities at an early age. By the 1930s, she was one of the most famous mediums in the world.

Duncan's séances were renowned for their astounding phenomena. She would materialize spirits, speak in tongues, and heal the sick. Her clients included celebrities, royalty, and even Prime Minister Winston Churchill. However, her fame came at a price.

Accusations of Fraud and Imprisonment

In 1941, Duncan was arrested and charged with fraud. The charges stemmed from a séance she had held for a naval officer's wife. The woman claimed that Duncan had promised to contact her dead husband, but had instead produced a fraudulent spirit.

Duncan's trial was a sensation. The prosecution presented a damning case, accusing her of using ventriloquism and other tricks to deceive her clients. Duncan defended herself vigorously, but she was ultimately convicted and sentenced to nine months in prison.

Legacy and Vindication

Duncan's imprisonment was a major setback for her career. However, she remained defiant, and she continued to practice mediumship after her release from prison. In 1956, she published her autobiography, This is My Story, in which she recounted her experiences.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement to vindicate Duncan. In 2001, the Scottish Parliament issued a formal apology for her wrongful conviction. And in 2014, the Royal Society of Edinburgh recognized Duncan as one of the most significant figures in Scottish history.

Kate Rice's Captivating Biography

Kate Rice's biography of Helen Duncan is a fascinating and meticulously researched account of the medium's life and career. Rice draws on extensive archival research and interviews with Duncan's family and friends to provide a vivid and nuanced portrait of a complex and enigmatic woman.

Rice's book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of spiritualism or the life of Helen Duncan. It is a powerful and moving story of a woman who defied all odds to follow her calling.
