Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809. His father left the family when Poe was young, and his mother died when he was three. Poe was raised by his foster parents, John and Frances Allan.
Poe began writing poetry and short stories at a young age. He published his first collection of poems, Tamarlane and Other Poems, in 1827. Poe's writing is often dark and macabre, and he is best known for his tales of horror and the supernatural.

Poe died in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 7, 1849. He was 40 years old. The cause of his death is unknown.
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on July 4, 1804. He was the son of a sea captain, and he spent his childhood in a small town on the coast of Maine.
Hawthorne began writing in the 1830s. His first novel, Fanshawe, was published in 1828. Hawthorne's writing is often dark and introspective, and he is best known for his novels about Puritan New England.
Hawthorne's most famous works include The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, and The Blithedale Romance. He also wrote a number of short stories and children's books.
Hawthorne died in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on May 19, 1864. He was 60 years old.
Herman Melville
Herman Melville was born in New York City on August 1, 1819. He was the son of a merchant, and he spent his childhood in a wealthy family.
Melville began writing in the 1840s. His first novel, Typee, was published in 1846. Melville's writing is often dark and pessimistic, and he is best known for his novels about the sea.
Melville's most famous works include Moby-Dick, Billy Budd, and Pierre. He also wrote a number of short stories and poems.
Melville died in New York City on September 28, 1891. He was 72 years old.
Henry David Thoreau
