That's exactly what Dr. Mark Emmert did. After serving as the president of the University of Washington for 13 years, he decided to step down and enroll as a freshman at Vanderbilt University.
In his new book, "College President Becomes Freshman Again," Dr. Emmert shares his insights and experiences from this unique journey. He writes about the challenges of being a student again, the lessons he learned from his classmates, and the transformative power of education.
Dr. Emmert's story is one of self-discovery and renewal. It's a reminder that it's never too late to learn, grow, and change. And it's a testament to the power of education to transform lives.
In this exclusive interview, Dr. Emmert talks about his motivations for becoming a freshman again, the challenges he faced, and the lessons he learned.
Q: What motivated you to step down as president of the University of Washington and enroll as a freshman at Vanderbilt University?
A: I had been president of the University of Washington for 13 years, and I felt like I had accomplished what I set out to do. I was also feeling a bit burned out, and I was looking for a new challenge.
I had always been interested in going back to school to get a degree in history, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to do it. I also thought it would be a great way to learn more about what students are facing today.
Q: What were some of the challenges you faced as a freshman?
A: One of the biggest challenges was getting used to being a student again. I had been a professor and an administrator for so long that I had forgotten what it was like to be on the other side of the desk.
I also had to adjust to being a student again. I had to learn how to take notes, study for exams, and write papers. It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed it.
Q: What were some of the lessons you learned from your classmates?
A: I learned a lot from my classmates. They taught me about the challenges they were facing, their hopes and dreams, and their perspectives on the world.
I also learned a lot about myself. I learned that I was still capable of learning new things, and that I was still passionate about education.
Q: What was the most transformative experience you had as a freshman?
A: The most transformative experience I had was taking a class on the history of the civil rights movement. I learned so much about the struggles that people went through to achieve equality, and it inspired me to be a better leader.
I also learned a lot about myself. I learned that I was capable of standing up for what I believe in, even when it's unpopular.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is considering going back to school?
A: I would say, "Go for it!" It's never too late to learn new things, and it's never too late to change your life.
Going back to school was one of the best decisions I ever made. It was a transformative experience that changed my life in many ways.
