The Road to Home: My Life and Times is a memoir by renowned author and activist Ruby Bridges. It tells the story of her childhood and the challenges she faced as one of the first African American students to attend an all-white school in the South.
Ruby was born in Tylertown, Mississippi, in 1954. She was the oldest of four children, and her parents were sharecroppers. When Ruby was six years old, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. As a result of this ruling, Ruby was one of six African American students who were chosen to attend the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans.
Ruby's first day of school was met with protests and violence. White parents and students gathered outside the school, chanting and throwing rocks. Ruby was escorted to class by four U.S. Marshals, and she faced constant harassment and intimidation from her classmates. Despite the challenges, Ruby persevered. She was a bright and determined student, and she refused to let the racism she faced stand in her way.
Ruby's story is an inspiring example of courage and determination. It is a reminder of the progress that has been made in the fight for civil rights, but it is also a reminder of the challenges that still remain. The Road to Home is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the history of the civil rights movement and the ongoing struggle for racial justice.
