A Tale of Two Artists
Thomas Hart Benton was born in Neosho, Missouri, in 1889. He studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Académie Julian in Paris. Benton's early work was influenced by the Ashcan School, a group of American artists who depicted everyday life in urban settings. However, Benton soon developed his own unique style, characterized by its bold colors, simplified forms, and dynamic compositions.
Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming, in 1912. He studied art at the Art Students League in New York City. Pollock's early work was influenced by the Mexican muralists, but he soon developed his own unique style, characterized by its use of drip painting and splattering.
Artistic Rivalry and Friendship
Benton and Pollock first met in the early 1930s. They quickly became friends, but their relationship was also marked by rivalry. Benton was a strong advocate of realism, while Pollock was a pioneer of abstract expressionism. Their different artistic visions often led to heated debates.
Despite their differences, Benton and Pollock remained friends throughout their lives. They supported each other's work, and they often visited each other's studios. Pollock even named one of his paintings "Portrait of Thomas Hart Benton." after the he died in 1970 at the age of 44.
