Mills was born in London in 1946 to actor John Mills and playwright Mary Hayley Bell. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she was raised by her mother in England. Mills began her acting career at the age of 12, when she was cast in the title role of Pollyanna. The film was a huge success, and Mills became an overnight sensation.
